Well, it is Friday (or Saturday for some of you)!
I’d like to try something different. I’ve been sending educational emails (and I’ll like to continue doing that) but I’d like to try this new format for MAD Friday emails. Something lighter but hopefully just as good (if not better). Let me know what you think!
In the news
Facebook, Twitter, Stripe, Netflix and other Big Tech companies are laying off thousands of people. It is concerning if you are looking for a job now, and especially if you were hoping for a warm place in a FAANG company.
If I were you, I wouldn’t panic nor give up on becoming a UX designer. Consider how many of those people are in design, and how many will actually be competing for entry level jobs? I bet not many.
So yes, it means there are less opportunities with bigger companies, at least for now.
But there is still plenty of work available! Last I checked on indeed.com there are close to 7000 UX design positions across the USA many being remote. So don’t give up on your dreams just yet!
A project idea
I already shared some of my project ideas that you can borrow for your portfolio. Here is one more:
An accountability buddy app that will check on your goals and the progress you are making
I’ll leave it at that.
Quote of the week
This is by far my favourite quote on design:
Don’t make something unless it is both necessary and useful; but if it is both necessary and useful, don’t hesitate to make it beautiful
It is attributed to Shakers, a very strict religious group that was formed in early 1700s. They were famous for their no-nonsense approach to life and design. Here is a great short article on Shaker’s and their design philosophy. It contains plenty of references if you’d like to look into them a bit more.
Podcast of the week
Finally, I’d like to recommend to you Beyond UX podcast:
It is a fairly new podcast done by Jeremy Miller, a product designer from New Orleans. Check it out!
And that’s all for today! Have a great weekend!
How do you like this format? Would it be too much if you get something like this every Friday? Please leave a comment and let me know!
Great article. The format seems good to me. And the content seems necessary and useful...
